Mavericks
California
Off Pillar Point near Half Moon Bay, Mavericks is one of the world’s most famous big-wave spots. On big winter swells, waves break far out over a rocky reef in cold, rough water. It is strictly for elite big-wave surfers. The bluff above offers a view, but waves break well offshore.
