    How it works

Surfers often estimate volume as body weight (kg) × a “skill factor.” Beginners need more float (around 1 liter per kg or more); advanced surfers ride far less. Fitness nudges it up or down.

    More is better, early on

Too little volume is the number one thing that slows beginners down. A bigger board catches more waves, and more waves means faster progress.

    Talk to a local shop

This is a starting point, not a rule. Your local surf shop knows your waves and can help you find the right board, new or used. Read our first-board guide.
