About White Belt Surfer
Everyone Is a Beginner at Something.
White Belt Surfer is more than a name. It’s a mindset, a story, and an open invitation to anyone who has ever looked at the ocean and wondered, “Could I do that?” The answer is yes.
The White Belt Mindset
Anyone Can Learn to Surf.
In martial arts, everyone begins with a white belt. It doesn’t matter how strong, smart, or successful you are outside the dojo. On day one, you tie on the same plain white belt as everyone else and start learning.
Surfing works the same way. The ocean is the great equalizer. Whether you’re paddling out for the first time or you’ve been surfing for decades, the water always has something new to teach you. We’re all white belts out there.
- 01
Everyone Starts at Zero
Every surfer you have ever admired once stood on the sand, unsure where to begin. Nobody is born knowing how to read a wave. Everyone starts in exactly the same place.
- 02
The Ocean Treats Everyone the Same
The ocean doesn’t care about your job title, your age, or where you come from. Out there, everyone is equal, and everyone gets humbled sooner or later.
- 03
You Never Stop Learning
Conditions change every day. New breaks, new boards, new lessons. Even after years in the water, there is always something new to figure out. That’s the best part.
- 04
Humility Over Ego
Respect the lineup, respect the locals, respect the water. A white belt shows up ready to listen, watch, and learn from the people who came before.
- 05
Enjoy the Journey
Falling is part of it. Wiping out is part of it. The first wave you actually ride never leaves you. Progress isn’t a finish line; it’s the whole point.
Where It Began
Our Story
White Belt Surfer was created around a simple idea: you don’t have to be an expert to appreciate the journey.
The name draws inspiration from the white belt, a symbol of beginnings, humility, and the willingness to learn.
Just like martial arts, surfing is a lifelong journey. There is always something new to experience, another lesson to learn, and another opportunity to grow.
White Belt Surfer embraces that philosophy while celebrating surf culture, coastal living, and the people who make these communities special.
Whether you’re an experienced surfer, an absolute beginner, or someone who simply loves the ocean, you’re welcome here.
Behind the Logo
Every Color Has a Meaning
The WBS logo was designed to tell the whole story at a glance: where every surfer begins, the journey in between, and what we’re all paddling toward.

White: The Clean Slate
White is where everyone begins. A clean slate, the same starting line for all of us. No experience required, no judgment, no head start. Everyone starts from the same place, but every journey from there is different.
Black: The Journey
Bold, solid, and grounded. Black stands for the work in between: the early mornings, the wipeouts, the paddle-outs, and the lessons that turn a beginner into a surfer, one wave at a time.
Red: The Goal
Red is the goal of mastery, the thing we’re all chasing and never quite finish chasing. It’s also our salute to the men and women in the iconic red trunks: the lifeguards who watch over every beach and keep the rest of us safe in the water.
Meet the Founder
Nick Arndt
Founder, White Belt Surfer

The beach taught me a language. Then it taught me a way of life.
Nick’s love for surfing didn’t start on a surfboard. It started in front of a TV.
As a kid, Nick never missed an episode of Baywatch. What started as a favorite show became something much bigger: it was one of the ways he learned English. Episode after episode, he picked up new words and phrases while being pulled into a world of sunshine, ocean, and the people who lived their lives along the shoreline.
Without realizing it, he was learning more than a language. He was falling in love with surf and coastal culture: the waves, the beach towns, the sense of community, and the lifeguards in red who ran toward the water when everyone else ran away from it.
That early fascination never faded. It grew into a deep appreciation for the ocean and everyone connected to it, from the surfers and shop owners to the lifeguards and locals who make every beach town unique.
Nick knows firsthand what it means to start from the very beginning, whether it’s learning a new language or learning to read the ocean. That’s the heart of White Belt Surfer: nobody starts as an expert, and nobody should feel like they don’t belong.
White Belt Surfer is Nick’s way of paying it forward: a place where anyone, from anywhere, can fall in love with surf culture the same way he did.
